Alpha Brands Consumer Spending Index 2021
The brands index was created in 2016 to offer a dedicated universe of the most relevant & important B2C and B2B brands serving U.S. and global consumers and businesses. The index is updated each year in early December to reflect the current state of consumption trends and offers exposure to important consumption categories. The index committee identifies the most appropriate consumption industries to track, ranks all companies in each industry to identify the leaders, then decides how much exposure is warranted to each industry based on it’s consumer trends research. The 200 companies chosen reflect the committee’s choices for the most relevant and iconic brands that are currently resonating the best with consumers & businesses. The 200 brands constituents also includes a handful of B2B brands that are deemed vital to the consumption supply chain. 90% of the 200 brands are domiciled in the U.S. and 10% of the brands are domiciled outside the U.S.
The Brands Index serves as the investment universe for the Alpha Brands suite of investments in partnership with Accuvest Global Advisors. The Rational Dynamic Brands Fund (HSUTX) is a concentrated portfolio of the brands the committee believes offer the best risk/return potential given the current macro-economic environment. The fund picks stocks from the Brands 200 Index.
There seems to be some merit isolating 200 of the most relevant brands serving over 70 key spending categories and updating the 200 top brands universe each December as consumer preferences change. Logically, a consumer-focused universe of stocks should be a better performer than the S&P 500 simply because the U.S. is a consumer-led economy. There’s likely $4+ trillion benchmarked incorrectly to the S&P 500 as a proxy for the economy.
